Did you know?!

This pretty perennial is considered a weed in Canada’s prairie provinces and British Columbia, where it grows and blooms in June-July. Like all species of Lactuca, Blue Lettuce (Lactuca pulchella) produces a milky sap.

The creator of this image was Norman Criddle (1875-1933), an accomplished artist and natural scientist. As provincial entomologist for Manitoba, one of his accomplishments was devising a solution, called the “Criddle Mixture”, to the devastation caused to crops by grasshoppers. His family’s home in Aweme has been designated a Manitoba Provincial Heritage Park.
